We are often asked “at what frequency should I sample oil?”
As a broad guide the table above can be used. If problems are suspected or if a machine is ‘mission critical’ then more frequent sampling is a sensible precaution!
In all sampling situations it is vital that the machine is in operation or has just been shut down when the sample is taken. This assures that the fluid is in turbulent flow and that any contaminants in the system are available to be captured in the sample.
If the oil sampling analysis shows that the system is operating at above the desired cleanliness level then on or off-line filtration can be used to remove the contaminants and water.
